1948 GMC Silversides 3751

Site updated 10/09/07 It's up for sale again!

Up for sale on Ebay is my beloved 1948 GMC Silversides bus.

The 1948 3751 GMC Silverside bus has been listed at ebay. The bus has been sold and is moving to Germany!

It runs smooth, is clean with no rust and has had recent mechanical updates. I'm posting this and spreading the word hoping a collector or someone with the time can finish it. I hesitate to sell it because it's just too cool and in too good of shape. On the other hand, I don't need it and would rather have the money. It seems a shame to let it sit until I have the time to drive it.

It first went up on EBAY on August 6th and sold for $7351. The buyer flaked after two months of working with him so I'm selling it again. I'm glad to answer any questions if you email me at mark@monroecrossing.com and could schedule a private showing if you're interested. My internet will be spotty for the next week or so call me at 612-386-1070.

Why are we selling it?
A few years ago, Lisa and I were traveling Minnesota a lot with our band "Monroe Crossing" and we just had Burlin and Cole. The thought of tooling around the five state area in a really cool bus and sleeping in our own beds every night was really attractive. Now, however, we are traveling more nationally and I've decided better fuel economy is more important than a cool ride.

What kind of shape is it in?
It's a 1948 GMC 3751 with (from what I can tell) the original Detroit Diesel 6-71 2 stroke in it. There is no rust. The bays are solid, the sides are straight. It rides well and handles great. It starts and runs like a dream. In the fall of '06, I brought it to some friends who run a truck and trailer repair place for a mechanical go over before starting an interior reconstruction.

They took it apart and put it back together. They modernized the brakes, changed out the oil bath air cleaners for a paper filter, repacked the bearings, replaced some hoses and gave it their blessing to hit the road. In their opinion, and mine, it wonderfully road worthy. I have the paper work for the repairs and will gladly connect you with the folks who did the work.

What does it need?
New paint and an interior.

About the new paint.
My friends at the truck and trailer shop have lots of experience with aluminum and are prepared to do the wash and paint. Remember, this this is all stainless and aluminum, so there's no rust to deal with. But you'll probably want to take off the hazy oxidation on the silver sides. I'd suggest painting the top white, it's just a classic look. The blue paint you see has faded and needs a freshening. If you look closely, you'll see the outline of the Greyhound that adorned the sides in a past life.

Interior
This thing was used as an R.V. at some point in it's life, and it was pretty tacky. We've removed most of it. My plans called for pulling out the old interior, except for the kitchen cabinets, and building in new bunks, shower and instrument storage. You'll see in the pictures that we've stripped it to the walls and left the plywood on the floor. The worst part of the interior currently is the remaining blue fake fur that was glued to the cab. I was going to strip it and paint it back like an old bus but I didn't like the solvent. Now I think it'll be easier to gluie a different fabric on it, but that's your call.

By the way, in the interest of full disclosure, when I say "we" cleared the interior, I actually mean a buddy of mine who was going to do the interior for me. I called him off the project when I decided to sell, figuring you, the buyer, probably would want a different interior. I think he'd be available if you'd like a completed interior, I'd be glad to ask him for you.

  • UPDATE!
7/11/07 - Wow! Thanks for the strong response! There's been a number of calls asking for the price and location. I didn't know how many collectors are out there.

Location, location, location - How could I forget that? The bus is just north of Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota in a friend's storage facility.

Price - Between the bus and the mechanicals, I've got about $9k into it. I want to get that out of it and expect to do better, hence I plan on putting it on ebay. I believe the bus to be in remarkable shape for it's age and a very fair deal. I've had the mechanics inspected professionally by a trucking firm and they did brakes, hoses, the air filter, repack etc. I know it's ready to run and I'll be glad to put you in touch with the people who did the work.

That said... If someone comes along before the ebay date with the right deal, I'll probably take it. I'd rather not pay the ebay percentage or deal with those who aren't serious.
    Thanks
    Mark
